It is believed that during this Japanese Buddhist Festival period, the ancestor's spirits come to visit their relatives. Paper lanterns are hung in front of the houses to guide the spirits. Between the 13th and 15th of August, you can observe the dance at 湯澤神社境内 Yuzawa Shrine grounds from 8pm onwardsNow that it’s light at 4:30am, we go for long early morning walks in the near-silence of the beech forest. One of the weirdest things we see each year are the “silver dragonfly grasses”: translucent white ghostlike plants with no chlorophyll, that can’t photosynthesise. Not needing sunlight, they lurk in the dark corners of the forest floor, and get their nutrients from underground fungal networks… and this year they’re out in force!

Between spring and midsummer there’s always a few guests enjoying the village. Many enjoy strolling from onsen to onsen, enjoying the relaxed pace of the village at this time of year, when neighbours have time to chat away the day. But some prefer to be more active, hiking, picking mountain vegetables and bamboo shoots, riding the zipline (or the more leisurely two-car local train), and boating on lake Hokuryuukou, before sampling the local craft beers and tasting the restaurants’ dishes of fresh local produce. It’s always a great time to be in Nozawa Onsen!
